Dear boys who laughed at my bald grandmother at Wal-Mart,

I don't think it's funny. My grandmother was bald because she was taking chemotherapy treatments. Yes, she is an old woman. Yes, she is fragile and sensitive, even more so because the chemo makes her feel weak and sick. However, she is still stronger than you two are. No, she couldn't beat you at arm wrestling or throw you to the ground or even protect herself if anyone tried to hurt her. She is strong, because she beat cancer TWICE. So go ahead, laugh at her and make fun of her because she doesn't have any hair, but I think my grandmother is beautiful, just the way she is. She must have felt horrible, being bald and feeling like crap. But she woke up, every morning, no matter how much she must have wanted to have just closed her eyes forever, because she knew that we would be totally lost without her. I love you, Mammaw!

Sincerely, Marissa – the granddaughter of a strong, amazing woman who has been diagnosed with both bladder and breast cancer and survived them both. By the way, if anyone ever laughs at her again for how she looks, I WILL yell at you.
This actually happened months ago, but I just remembered it last night and I thought I would write a letter to them.

Women who have cancer (as well as men) feel horrible. Having all of your hair fall out really lowers your self-esteem. No matter how hard cancer patients try to feel pretty (which they definitely are beautiful  ) they still may not believe that they actually are.

You really shouldn't laugh at someone who is dealing with cancer though. Put yourself in their shoes for awhile. Imagine feeling sick, vulnerable, weak. You feel like you just want to sleep and stay asleep forever. Waking up and getting up in the morning is hard. A lot of them just give up.
Supporters (friends and family of the cancer patient) are extremely important for recovering. Without people telling them how much they love them and how important they are, the patient may just want to give up.

If you see someone with cancer, walk up to them and tell them they are beautiful.

Have any cancer stories. Feel free to share your story by leaving a comment OR if you can send me a note.

And if you are like those two boys who make fun of people like this, STFU. JERKS.

Hello. You are a very loving and supportive granddaughter. I personally am thinking of going bald (on purpose) because... let's just say my hair has been distressing me too much so I just want to get rid of it. But I am so afraid of what ppl might think of me. Also, my parents won't let me go bald. I am in a dilemma. I don't know what to do......

Your grandmothet is freakin' kickass. I shall draw inspiration from her if I find myself needing to take the drastic way out...
